For Latino Workers
Form Community Members

photoWorkers and Lawrence Community members have an important role in our project. The first year of PenC, several discussions were facilitated among construction workers, contractors, and Lawrence community to learn about the reality of construction work, hazards, and prevention approaches. However, the roles of workers and community change during each phase of our project.

Are you concerned about a family member or a friend falling from heights or being exposed to silica dust?

The construction industry presents high hazard activities for its workers. Falls are the most frequent cause of death in the construction industry. In addition, construction workers are exposed to another important risk: silica dust. This happens during demolition, cutting, blasting, grinding, drilling, crushing, or dry sweeping concrete. Silica particles cause scars in the lungs and these scars cause silicosis, which is incurable. Silicosis does not cause symptoms for a long time, mostly after 15 or 20 years of exposure.

To know more about PenC activities with workers and community ew have created Protección en Construcción newsletter. This Newsletter is published quarterly.

How do on the job injuries affect us?

Injuries suffered by workers at worksites can affect every aspect of their life. They effect families, friends, and community relationships.

You can help Hispanic construction workers to be safe at construction sites.

Everyone in the Lawrence community can contribute to improve safety by sharing information about this program, especially with construction workers and contractors. If you know contractors who may have fallen and/or have silica dust hazards at their worksite, please refer them to us.

Activities for the community
Charlas with different Organizations
Also, we are conducting “charlas” through the city. In these “charlas”, people have the opportunity to share with others and meet representatives from diferent organizations. Participants are able to ask these representatives about Latino construction workers Health and Safety and resources available for small construction business. So, please ask to our Outreach Team and pay attention to Local newspapers, radio stations or posters to keep on informed and to be part of the next “charla”.
