For Latino WorkersWorkers and Lawrence Community members have an important role in our project. The first year of PenC, several discussions were facilitated among construction workers, contractors, and the Lawrence community to learn about the reality of construction work, hazards, and prevention approaches. However, the roles of workers and community change during each phase of our project. Upcoming roles and activities with workers and community members will be made available and updated periodically. Workers’ role in Protección en Construcción PenCOur Partnership is targeted to contractors and aim at reducing falls and silica exposure hazards on construction sites. However, workers play a vital role in making construction worksites safer and healthier. Workers participation in each phase of the project has been essential. Dozens of workers have discussed questions about safety and other problems faced by Hispanic construction workers. At the same time, they gave their ideas for solutions to hazards on the job to make construction sites safer. Their input has allowed the identification of issues such as the need to improve worker/supervisor relationships, and the importance of on-site safety training, among others. To know more about PenC activities with workers and community have created Protección en Construcción Newsletter. This Newsletter is published quarterly. OSHA 10-hour trainingAlthough Latino construction workers cannot get training directly through this program, the UMass Lowell Department of Work Environment, the City of Lawrence, and the Laborers Local 175 have provided OSHA 10-hour training in Spanish in the past, and may do so in the future. They will also help you find where Latino construction workers can get approved training.
